Washington DC - Part Six

After visiting the Smithsonian Castle, we made our way to the Washington Monument. I’ve always wanted to go in but alas we were unable to obtain tickets on this trip. Perhaps on a future visit. I think it would be really cool to go up at sunset! Still, I was able to get some great photos from the ground!

Do you know why the Monument is different colors? Perhaps you never noticed. I hadn’t! It’s more obvious up close and it’s because it was built in two phases. Funds ran out and then the Civil War arrived! By the time building resumed, the original quarry wasn’t available anymore. The new stone wasn’t suitable, so after only a short time they switched to the third option.

I love lens flare! Many people don’t, but I often capture it on purpose!

Both my brother and husband captured pictures of me “getting the shot”. The things one will do for a good photograph, like lying down on the Washington Mall. LOL!

I actually took the above photograph of the White House from the Mall. I didn’t realize at the time, that it would be my favorite view. The last time I visited DC you were able to get right up to the fence and take a picture through it. I discovered later on this trip that you can’t even walk on that side of the street anymore due to increased security. So I have a lovely photo of fences and barriers. Ha ha! I’m so glad I took the time to pull out my long lens when I was at the Mall!

In the upcoming post we will visit the Lincoln Memorial! I hope you’ll join me for the journey!
