Patrick’s Point State Park

My family and I recently visited Patrick’s Point. I’d been here before but had only seen the coastal areas because I was there to watch and photograph my pilot husband and his fellow Coasties hoisting off of Wedding Rock.

I didn’t realize at the time that there was so much more to this Park! I just had to go back and explore more areas. This time I took my whole family along and we enjoyed spending a couple hours in the park.

There’s a really neat Yurok built Sumeg Village, near the entrance (park at the Visitor’s Center). The original village was closer to the ocean but this village has been replicated for educational purposes.

The houses are pretty interesting! You can even go inside and explore. As you can see by the photos the doors are quite small! They made them that way on purpose so that bears would be unable to enter. The women and girls would sleep inside and the men and boys would either sleep outside, or in the sweat house if the weather was bad.

After checking out the village, we took a trail to go climb Ceremonial Rock. This was a beautiful little trail and there are stairs that take you right to the top. My boys ran way ahead but I took my time following my daughter so I could stop and take pictures. I was loving the sun filtering down and lighting the ferns!

The view from the top is wonderful! It overlooks the park meadow and you can also see Big Lagoon County Beach down below!

We decided to head down and across the meadow to Wedding Rock next. Wedding Rock is just incredible! There’s a nice path to take you out to the rock. It has many beautiful landings overlooking the ocean. If you are the adventurous type, you can climb up even higher. Just be super careful not to fall if you choose to climb! These rocky shores are unforgiving!

There’s a neat little rocky island (pictured) my son decided to call the pirate ship. It really does look like a ship!

Keep your eyes open! If you’re lucky, you might even spot migrating whales here!

Next to Wedding Rock is a really nice rocky shoreline to explore. Photographers love this area!

Children and adults alike love carefully climbing over the rocks and seeking cool sea creatures. Most likely crabs, snails and starfish.

There are even more trails and beaches (where you can hunt agates) and things to explore that we didn’t get around to. There is also camping!

It’s a big beautiful world out there! Get out and explore!

If you’re ever following the Northern California coastline, remember to stop and check out Patrick’s Point! You’ll be glad you did!
