Lassen Volcanic National Park - Part Two (Subway Cave)

If you drive North from Manzanita Lake towards Burney, you’ll come across Subway Cave. Subway Cave is actually a Lava Tube!

There is a short trail from the parking lot to the cave entrance.

Actually you can walk to either end of the tube and exit the other side if you wish.

The boys loved it so much we actually visited two days in a row! The first day we walked both directions in the cave because it was so hot outside (and it was more exciting inside).

While walking outside, keep your eyes open and you might see a cute lizard!

When you go make sure you have a coat and a light of some kind. It gets so dark in there, your eyes will never adjust to the darkness!

Watch your step as the floor is rough, and if you are tall watch your head.

It was pretty impressive walking through this massive lava tube and imagining when the lava flowed through! There are some areas where you can see the folds of the lava or where it bubbled and burst! Such incredible heat and power it must have had!

It doesn’t take very long to walk through and you won’t regret a stop at Subway Cave!
