Cape Hatteras

A few weeks ago my family went down to Cape Hatteras for the first time. We spent the night in Nags Head. It was the prefect break that we all so desperately needed!

Photographing the Cape Hatteras lighthouse has always been on my list. We couldn’t climb the lighthouse this trip because it’s closed for renovations. They are currently getting ready to strip the paint on the outside so it can get a pretty new look soon. I hope they are done with renovations before we have to move again because I would love to climb it!

Visiting during Spring Break was nice because it wasn’t as busy (or hot) as it will be this summer. Still, there were a lot of visitors milling about.

Even though the lighthouse is closed, the museum is still open and has some neat things on display. Particularly interesting is the section that tells you the story of moving the entire lighthouse. Standing there and seeing how tall it is, it’s crazy to think they were able to move the entire thing!!! What a feat! If they hadn’t moved it the ocean would have eventually claimed it. The beach is eroding. In fact a few houses were claimed by the ocean about a week or so after our visit!

After visiting the lighthouse we enjoyed a picnic lunch and headed to the nearby beach. It was gorgeous!

I love the ocean! Good ol’ Vitamin Sea!!! Something about being out in the wide open spaces with a fresh sea breeze is healing. It’s peaceful. Your mind can un-clutter and listening to children’s laughter is delightful. We can all take a lesson from the children to relax, play and just be. Get curious. You never know what treasures will wash up on shore and what you might see.

Just off shore the dolphins were out and about. It was really neat watching them glide through the waves!!!

This day was a gift!

I can’t wait to go back! I’d love to photograph the lighthouse at a different time of day, or even night! That would be cool!
