Appomattox Court House

Memorial Day we thought it would be appropriate to visit Appomattox and see where the Civil War ended. I had always wanted to visit.

We began in the small museum and watched a short informative video before exploring the grounds.

The McLean House is where the war ended. Fascinatingly, the McLean family moved to Appomattox from Manassas, where their home had served as Confederate Headquarters in the First Battle of Bull Run. The house was damaged and they decided to move to escape future fighting. McLean said, “The war began in my front yard and ended in my front parlor.”

It was pretty incredible to be standing in the room where it all ended! To be walking where Generals Lee and Grant and so many brave men walked. Isn’t it amazing we still have these connections to history? Although the house was disassembled and reassembled in the same place after the war. Very little furnishings are original. The original tables and chairs Lee and Grant used now reside in museums.

It’s a much smaller room than you might imagine.

There is so much more to explore at Appomattox! There are many buildings and plenty of grounds to roam.

You can visit the tavern where parole documents were printed, see where the final shot was fired and so much more!

I would love to visit again someday. There’s a big Civil War museum nearby that looked like it would be pretty interesting.
