Mount Vernon

Last summer we were privileged to visit George Washington’s Mount Vernon. They were doing some restoration work on the mansion and the family tomb. That is why you see scaffolding on the mansion. Also at the tomb, the marble sarcophaguses belonging to George and Martha Washington were temporarily crated.

We toured the mansion first. It was pretty interesting to actually stand in his home and see things he used and touched. It’s fun to feel that connection to history and those that came before us.

The grounds were so beautiful! I can see why his family loved living there! The view of the Potomac was so pretty!

As we toured the grounds, I appreciated all the folks in period dress that took the time to speak with us and tell us about what life was like back then.

If you go, you can expect to do a lot of walking! The grounds are quite large, so wear good shoes! It’s a good idea to have water to drink as well.

As I mentioned before, due to restoration work on the family tomb, the marble sarcophaguses belonging to George and Martha Washington were temporarily crated.

I thought it was so cool that on the wall behind the sarcophaguses were the words “I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord, he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. St John, X1.25.26” How cool is that?!? The perfect verse!

The slave cemetery is sad. It’s full of unmarked graves. They are working to find and map out the graves. As of 2017 they had found 70.

Something I thought was really neat, is that you can purchase plants from Mount Vernon for your own home! I brought home a Redbud tree. I thought it died over the winter, but I am happy to report that it’s looking great this summer!

If you ever get the chance, you should definitely visit and discover all the history for yourself!
